Tater-Tot-Tutoring-Homeschool Differentiates Itself From Public Schools
An old expression (that I still hear today) is, “Those that do, do. Those that can’t, teach.” This is highly offensive to me. I have had many other occupations and was quite good at them over the years, but they were “jobs”. To me, teaching has always been a passion since I was in first grade. Young children are like sponges. They absorb everything, good or bad. As a child, I loved school, but I will admit it was hard. Each year, I found the struggle harder and learned how to “cheat” off my neighbor’s paper. When I asked for help, teachers said, “We just went over this. Weren’t you listening?” Or the other degrading remark I would hear, “You know how to do this. We do this every week.”. What we didn’t know back in the 1960s was I had dyslexia with numbers, and I was on the autism spectrum (which was not even heard of back then). I knew learning was power, so I had to teach myself “tricks” to remember and learn differently. I have integrated my learning struggles in to my teaching style. One typical sentence kids still use today when doing homework is, “This is stupid.” That’s kids speak, which means, “I don’t know how to do this.” Teachers teach the subjects, but they don’t always consider that every student is different and may have learning disabilities that may not have been diagnosed or not severe enough to qualify for additional help. When I taught in public schools, my style differed from all of my colleagues, and it worked.
Teaching Tailored to the Student’s Style of Learning
- There are four main types of learning styles:
- 1. Visual: Learn best through visual aids and images.
- 2. Auditory: Learn best through listening and verbal explanations.
- 3. Reading/Writing: Learn best through reading and writing.
- 4. Kinesthetic (or hands-on): Learn best through physical activities and movement.
There are learning style assessments to help me provide the correct style best suited for the student Tm working
